Angell Town, Lambeth
South East London
Angell Town is an award-winning regeneration scheme in Lambeth, close to Brixton town centre.
Angell Town was the first purely social housing scheme to win a Gold Building for Life award.
Socially sustainable regeneration
Angell Town's regeneration scheme was resident driven and included a self-build element.
After residents had construction training and work placements with design teams, they completed the interior fitting of their homes in return for enhanced specifications. They fitted their own kitchens, tiled and decorated.
Green living
Angell Town is an eco-project. It includes solar panels, passivents (natural vents that don't require electricity) and the collection of rain water.
The self build units include solar panels, under-floor heating and large windows to maximise light and heat intake from the sun.
Award-winning design
Angell Town has received a large number of prestigious accolades:
- Gold Standard Building for Life
- Commendation for innovative design Civic Trust Awards 2004
- Shortlisted for Best New Development by a Housing Association (Evening Standard - New Homes Awards 2003)
- Best Public Housing Project 2002
- RIBA Award for Architecture 2002
- Housing Design Award 2000.
