Gold Lane, Barnet
North London
At Gold Lane, eight new physically and socially sustainable houses replaced a back-street of 45 vandalised garages, transforming a previously neglected area.
Sustainable homes
Low maintenance, recyclable materials were used to build the homes, while gardens were designed to improve the bio-diversity of the environment.
Bio-diversity
Pre-grown ivy trellis screens provide graffiti-proof boundary fencing and 100 per cent sedum roofing and gabion walling around each new garden add ecological value. Local bio-diversity levels have increased and residents have noticed a higher number of butterflies, birds and insects in the area.
Green living
Residents are encouraged to live more sustainable lifestyles:
- power and communication channels strategically placed to allow home offices to be set up
- purpose-made recycling facilities in kitchens
- sensor operated lighting and highly efficient condensing boilers to reduce energy consumption.
Award winning design
Gold Lane has gone on to win a number of awards, most recently the Grand Designs award for 'Best New Development' by demonstrating a progressive attitude to design, the environment and new ways of living. It was the only social housing development to win a Grand Designs award, beating private developers from across the UK.
