Clearing blockages
Blocked kitchen pipes and toilets are normally caused by flushing the wrong things down them.
Blocked kitchen sinks
Blockages are usually caused by a build up of things like fat, tea leaves or hair.
To help prevent blockages do not pour fats and grease down the kitchen sink. You should clean waste pipes with hot water and soda crystals at least once a month.
To clear a sink
If more than one unit is blocked, the problem could be in the soil stack or main drain. If this is the case, it will need to be cleared by a plumber.
Otherwise, to clear blocked waste you will need a:
- bowl
- jug or cup
- rag or dishcloth
- plunger.
To clear a blockage:
- Bale out most of the water.
- Hold a rag tightly over the overflow opening and place the plunger over the drain hole.
- Pump the plunger up and down rapidly to clear the blockage.
- After clearing the blockage, it is advisable to clean out the trap underneath the sink.
To clean the trap:
- Place the bowl underneath the trap.
- Unscrew the joints and remove the trap.
- Clean it thoroughly and then replace the trap and check the seals are in place.
- Check that all the joints are screwed up tightly.
Blocked toilet
Never flush sanitary towels or nappies down the toilet.
To clear a toilet
- Fill a bucket with cold water.
- Pour the water into toilet pan until the blockage is cleared.
If this doesn't work, do not use the toilet as you will make it worse. Contact your housing officer for advice.
