Shared areas
It is your responsibility to look after the shared or communal areas of where you live.
It is one of the conditions of your tenancy that you and the other people living in your house or block keep the shared areas clean (unless you have a cleaner you pay for by a service charge added to your rent) and free from obstruction.
The shared areas are made up of:
- the entrance hall
- stairways and landings
- sometimes the dustbin area and the front garden or yard.
Keeping shared areas clean
You and the other people living in your house or block will need to decide how best to keep the shared areas clean. You may want to take it in turns to keep them clean or you might decide that each of you will be responsible for a particular area.
Remember that the shared areas are often the only escape route in case of fire. Do not leave anything in the shared areas that could cause an obstruction to someone trying to leave the building in an emergency.
We are responsible for regularly decorating the shared areas.
