The different types of leaseholder types, advice on understanding the terms of your lease and the process for extending your lease.
What is a lease?
A residential lease is a tenancy agreement for a term of 21 years or more. It grants the leaseholder the exclusive right to occupy a property for a set term. Most leases set the term at 99 or 125 years.
A lease sets out that repairs to the building, cleaning, gardening, insurance and other communal services will be paid separately through a service charge. It also states that a leaseholder must pay for and carry out all repairs within their flat.
