As a settled accommodation tenant, if you are on a low income or receive Income Support or another State benefit, you may be entitled to help with paying your rent.
How to claim
Contact our Collections Team or the housing department of your local council for information on how to claim and how much benefit you could receive.

Claim as soon as possible
It is important to make a benefit claim as soon as possible. If your local council asks you for more information when you are claiming or receiving benefits, you must respond straight away. If you don't, they may cancel your claim.
Keep documents
When you hand in a form or documents to support your claim always ask for a receipt.
Keep copies of any letters you write to your local council and make a note of any phone calls you make, including the name of the person you spoke to.
Continue to pay your rent
If you are waiting for your housing benefit claim to be assessed or are receiving housing benefit, you must still pay your rent in full and on time.
Entitled to the benefit
If the council decides you are entitled to housing benefit, check when it will start, how much of your rent it will cover and how much, if anything, you need to pay.
Remember, if housing benefit does not cover all of your rent, you are responsible for paying the difference.
