The physical and social sustainability of the Gold Lane scheme in Barnet has completely transformed a once neglected area.
Sustainable homes
Sustainability criteria were crucial for determining both the function and the aesthetic of the development. Low maintenance, recyclable materials were used to build the homes, while gardens were designed to improve the bio-diversity of the environment.
Green living
Residents are encouraged to live more sustainable lifestyles. All homes were provided with 'home-office' potential in the form of strategically placed power and communication channels. Purpose-made recycling facilities were integrated into kitchens, and energy consumption was reduced by installing sensor operated lighting and highly efficient condensing boilers.
Award winning design
Gold Lane has gone on to win a number of awards, most recently the Grand Designs award (Opens in new window) for 'Best New Development' by demonstrating a progressive attitude to design, the environment and new ways of living. It was the only social housing development to win a Grand Designs award, beating private developers from across the UK.
